Prolific blogger and businessman, Pat Phelan, has just launched AllFreeCalls.ie (a site I helped him build). The specifics of the deal itself are very interesting: the service lets you call the world for free if you’ve got local or national calls included in a bundle from your provider. But the implications go a little further. In a country that screws it’s immigrants in every way possible, it’s nice to see this small step that’ll make their lives a little easier. They can now call home for less and talk longer too, without the need for phone cards. I won’t pretend to know Pat’s motivations, but I think that behind that big, Cork voice (I know Pat only though the phone; how suitable for a telecoms guy!) is a real desire to make the world a better place for people who depend on phones to keep in touch with home (read some of his early posts and you’ll know what I’m talking about). And make a few quid on the side! Well done, Pat.
