BarCamp Dublin is tomorrow (21 April 2007). Sign-ups are strong and there are lots of new and interesting people coming. And some old and not so interesting people too. Joking… If you haven’t signed-up or don’t know what it’s about, head over to the wiki or the blog right now and consider it. It’s free!
I’ll be giving a talk titled Web Usability 101: A 30 Minute Crash Course. If you’ve got a site with an identifiable purpose (think selling products, generating leads, getting sign-ups), you can’t afford to ignore usability. I’ll tell you what makes a site easy to use and show you how to avoid the pitfalls. We’ll look at some good and bad Irish examples and have a bit of fun. The key to usability is making things clear and leaving no questions in the visitors mind. Here’s a few Irish examples with too many questions:

The answers are “Journey Planner”, no and no. If you find this stuff interesting, please come along.

Hi Eoghan. It looks really interesting, raging I can’t go. Would you be able to make some of the presentation available afterwards for those that can’t make it?
Really looking forward to this…
Great presentation Eoghan. Who would have thought a bank login form could raise such a debate? My 2 cents would be to get AIB to create a few different designs and split test them to compare bounce rates, time spent on login page etc.
Hi Eoghan. Good presentation yesterday. Took some interesting things from it. Just wondering if you could up your presentation and what was the site (i think it was the only one) that you liked (and showcased): tlc.com or tld.com or something like that??? Cheers
Hi Eoghan,
Enjoyed your talk, there’s nothing more entertaining than poring over other people’s terrible web page designs!
I asked you a question about user testing in the talk - a great resource for this is the following book on paper prototyping - http://www.paperprototyping.com/what.html - which advocates that low-tech testing with as few as 3 users can uncover the majority of user interface issues.
Another inspirational book on usability, and my personal usability bible (not web centered), by the late and great Jef Raskin is - http://jef.raskincenter.org/humane_interface/summary_of_thi.html - lots to explore there!
David Behan: Here’s what you’re looking for… http://thetlc.org.uk/
Thanks for that! :D
Guys: Thanks for coming to the talk. I hope to follow up with some articles on the subject (which will make more sense than plain slides).
Eoghan: Cheers for the links. Will definitely check them out.
Hi Eoghan,
Thanks for the talk, I really enjoyed it. Where did you get the video of the eye movements on the page? It really showed what the average user is actually doing.

Thank you Barcamp Dublin…
I went along to Barcamp Dublin yesterday and as usually had a great day. The organisers Joe, Elly, Eoghan and Paul did a fantastic job. It was my first time in the Digital Exchange building, which provided an intimate atmosphere for the event. That …
